Drogi Senatorze,

Międzynarodowa nagonka na Polskę, która na naszych oczach nabiera tempa zarówno w Europie jak i w USA, nagonka mająca zdyskredytować nowy polski rząd, demokratycznie wybrane władze i Prezydenta, jest niezrozumiała zarówno dla mnie,  jak i wielu Amerykanów polskiego pochodzenia.  Jesteśmy w najwyższym stopniu zaniepokojeni Pana listem do Pani Premier Beaty Szydło. Z listu tego bowiem można wywnioskować, ku naszemu wielkiemu zdumieniu, że powstał on na bazie fałszywych przesłanek, bez gruntownego zapoznania się z tematem.

  Reprezentujemy liczną Polonię, która walczyła o wejście Polski do NATO, która była zmuszona uciekać z Polski przed komunistycznymi bandytami Jaruzelskiego, zaznając przed tym z rąk oprawców krzywd i cierpień. Przeżyłem w USA całe swoje dorosłe życie i zawsze wierzyłem w prawość   reprezentanta mieszkańców tego wspaniałego kraju w Senacie USA. Po przeczytaniu  Pana listu moja wiara została jednak zachwiana.

Na początku Pana listu do Premier Szydło, twierdzi Pan, że ma Pan ścisłe związki z mniejszością polską w USA.  Jeśli to prawda, to gdzie Pan był, kiedy myśmy opłakiwali zabitego w Smoleńsku polskiego Prezydenta, domagając się międzynarodowego śledztwa?

Do dzisiaj katastrofa smoleńska nie została w sposób prawidłowy wyjaśniona, szczególnie że powszechnie są znane różne podejrzane okoliczności. Wtedy, kilka lat temu, wysyłaliśmy do Pana listy w tej sprawie, ale Pan nie był zainteresowany.

Gdzie Pan był, kiedy poprzedni rząd PO  przez 8 lat metodycznie niszczył literę prawa w Polsce, bijąc pałami demonstrantów przy każdej okazji,  wrzucając do więzień na cale lata młodych ludzi bez procesu tylko za to, że krytykowali rząd?

Gdzie Pan był, kiedy PO, po objęciu władzy  w 2008 roku wyrzuciła na bruk prawie wszystkich 500 dziennikarzy pracujących w państwowych mediach?

Gdzie Pan był, kiedy rząd PO naruszył 46 razy postanowienia Sądu Konstytucyjnego?

Gdzie Pan był, kiedy niemieckie media w Polsce (90 % prasy i 70% Telewizji i Radia) podżegały do spalenia siedziby Prawa i Sprawiedliwości?

W pańskim liście pisze Pan, że nalega Pan na to, aby polski rząd powrócił na drogę wartości zawartych w OBWE i Unii Europejskiej, poszanowania demokracji, praw człowieka i litery prawa.

Panie Senatorze, ten rząd nie tylko, że jest w pełni oddany demokracji, prawom człowieka i poszanowaniu prawa, ale stoi na ich straży!  Niszczenie prawa i demokracji w Polsce, które tak bardzo leży Panu na sercu, miało miejsce, i to na wielką skalę, podczas poprzednich rządów post-komunistycznej Platformy Obywatelskiej.

Jako Amerykanie polskiego pochodzenia, zdecydowanie popieramy działania nowego polskiego rządu, szczególnie dlatego, że odzwierciedlają one wartości przynależne zachodniej cywilizacji.

Chcielibyśmy, aby Pan to zrozumiał. Zarówno Polacy w Ameryce jak i Amerykanie polskiego pochodzenia pracowali bardzo ciężko przez te wszystkie lata, aby odsunąć od władzy w Polsce przyjaciół Putina, przefarbowanych komunistów, tak samo jak nasi rodzice i dziadowie walczyli ze zbrodniczym systemem komunistycznym.  Pana list do nowego polskiego rządu jest jak nóż w plecy.

Drogi Senatorze,

Namawiam Pana, w imieniu swoim jak i wielu Amerykanów polskiego pochodzenia, do zapoznania się z faktami, zanim włączy się Pan w sprawy innego państwa, sprawy tak delikatne, jak mandat do rządzenia nadany przez Naród, który jest największym przyjacielem Ameryki w Europie.

Przygniatające zwycięstwo Prawa i Sprawiedliwości w wyborach w zeszłym roku ukazuje niezbicie, jak bardzo Polska potrzebuje reform i jak bardzo Polacy tych reform chcą!

Polskie społeczeństwo, jak pokazują wyniki wyborów, upoważniło Prawo i Sprawiedliwość do przeprowadzenia koniecznych zmian. Według tych samych wyników, 90% Polaków zamieszkałych w USA głosowało właśnie na PiS, wyrażając tym swą wolę przeprowadzenia reform w Polsce. Wielu z nas w wyborach do Senatu USA głosowało na Pana. Mamy te same amerykańskie wartości, dlatego głosowaliśmy na Pana. Jesteśmy więc zdumieni, że wybrał Pan w tym sporze stronę przeciwną, wrogą zarówno nam jak i Ameryce.

Skoro podważa Pan w ten sposób dekady ciężkiej pracy, często bardzo niebezpiecznej, całych generacji Amerykanów polskiego pochodzenia i Polaków zamieszkałych w Ameryce mającej na celu odzyskanie przez Polskę demokracji i praworządności, to my protestujemy przeciw Pana mieszaniu się w sprawy suwerennego Państwa Polskiego, przeciw Pana listowi do Pani Premier Beaty Szydło.

Żądamy, aby zapoznał się Pan z faktami. Osobiście bowiem głęboko wierzę, że kiedy już posiądzie Pan wiedzę na temat co właściwie dzieje się w Polsce, stanie się Pan gorącym zwolennikiem zmian i reform w kraju, który jest najbardziej oddanym sojusznikiem USA.

Dear Senator Cardin, Senator McCain, and Senator Durbin,

We represent a Polish-American community which has strived to strengthen democracy, freedom, and transparency in Poland since the fall of communism, especially in the last several years. We are proud of Poland’s accomplishments in overcoming many challenges during its transition from communism, of its history and its contributions to Europe. We supported and are grateful for Poland’s membership in NATO, and appreciate its close strategic relationship with the United States.

We feel compelled to respond to your letter to the Prime Minister of Poland, Ms. Szydło. We had appreciated your commitment to a democratic process and values in the past, but – regretfully - are concerned and alarmed that your letter to Prime Minister Szydło reveals a lack of understanding of the basic issues in Poland and entangles you in an internal, counter-democratic political dispute, which started right after the previous ruling (PO-PSL) coalition was unseated in the last parliamentary election. Since that time, we have witnessed a press campaign, spilling over to international mainstream media, with an apparent aim to discredit Poland’s democratic choice, its President and the new government. This campaign has been disturbing to most Poles, including us, Polish Americans, who support the democratic and sovereign change in Poland.

While in your letter you “urge the government to recommit to the core principle of OSCE and the EU, including the respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law”, we find the new government fully committed to those values and we support it. On the other hand, we had been troubled by a lack of international reaction when democratic values were trampled by the previous government, aligned with the post-communist interest.

You referred to recent legal acts that concern the Constitutional Court and the publically funded state media. In the case of the Constitutional Court, the post-election dispute was a result of the previous coalition’s illegal, unconstitutional attempt in the final days of the previous parliament to force its 14 judges to the 15-member Constitutional Court. The latest changes just lessen that majority to 9 to 6 still in favor of the previous coalition. The new governing party (Law and Justice) stated that it is not its intention to have the majority in the court. Merely, it passed a law that calls for a two-thirds vote and a sequential deliberation of cases to reduce a possibility of an undue hindering of the new parliament’s legislature, making the standards surrounding the court more consistent with those in other Western European countries. Sadly, the Constitutional Court’s president, representing the former coalition, has been acting in a sternly partisan way. It should be noted that the Constitutional Court is not some type of a sacrosanct, directly elected institution in the Polish system, and was established in the later years of the communist rule. Reforming the Constitutional Court is a small but necessary step in the direction of the systemic change towards a Western model of the judiciary.

With regard to the public media reform, the new law introduces administration standards that are already in use in other European Union countries. The latest public media appointments merely bring some much needed pluralism and a variety of opinions. In the prior years, the previous coalition has effectively politically purged public media of reporters that could have been critical of its government. A notable large wave of sackings in public media occurred in 2010, right after the crash of the Presidential airplane in Smolensk, Russia. To recall, the crash killed President Kaczynski, key Polish as well as NATO generals, and many other high profile government officials. By the decision of Prime Minister Tusk, primary control over the investigation and evidence, including the sole identification of the bodies, was given to Russia, and the case is yet to be properly investigated and explained. The PO-PSL coalition managed to solidify its monopoly over all branches of government and media channels in the short period following that crash.

While in your letter you allege your links to Polish-American communities, many Poles remain dismayed that you showed no reaction when they asked for international assistance in the investigation of the mentioned Smolensk crash. In fact, you were among the U.S. Senators our organization addressed directly regarding that matter. Similarly, Poles are surprised that you raise some unsubstantiated concerns now, but you were absent when the previous PO-PSL government repeatedly violated freedoms and the rule of law, for example, repressing street protesters, holding young people critical of the government in jail for years without a trial, or evading to investigate massive irregularities and electoral protests in the 2014 local elections. Returning to the matters raised in your letter, why were you absent when the PO party fired about 500 journalists from the public media since 2008, or when it failed to implement 46 judgments of the Constitutional Court?

Dear US Senators - we urge you, and believe most Poles would do so too, to carefully examine facts and the local situation prior to voicing opinions and any concerns. It worries us that your views and the letter appear to reflect the baseless press editorials that have been lately circulating, defaming Poland and undermining its democratically elected authorities.

Poland values its strong relationship with the United States, and is a proud NATO member. Importantly, Poles are likely the most pro-American nation in Europe. The election victory of the Law and Justice party last October reflects the Polish peoples’ desire to reform their country. The Polish society gave the Law and Justice party a strong mandate for the reforms. Moreover, Polish-Americans gave the new government an overwhelming 90% vote. Many of us also voted for you. It saddens us that you choose sides in a detrimental internal political battle which hurts the democratic process as well as the prior years’ efforts of many Poles at home and abroad. We object to your letter to Prime Minister Szydło, and ask that you revisit and examine all the facts. We strongly believe that once you are fully informed, you will support the democratic process and reforms in Poland.
