W ostatnim tygodniu Adwentu, bezpośrednio przed Bożym Narodzeniem, w liturgii Nieszporów pojawiają się tzw. wielkie antyfony, czasami także zwane antyfonami "O", jako że każda z nich od tego wykrzyknika się zaczyna.
Obecnie mamy ich siedem, chociaż w ciągu wieków liczba ta się zmieniała. Ktoś kiedyś porównał te antyfony do statków, napełnionych Bożymi obietnicami i zapowiedziami Mesjasza - bo każda z nich sięga do tekstów proroków Pierwszego Przymierza. Jednocześnie pokazują one rozwój historii zbawienia, od samych początków stworzenia.
